Selfpolishing-only antifoulings
Any surface peaks present after application of the antifouling polish away at a faster rate than the general paint film. The initial roughness is therefore slightly reduced.
As the biocides and other soluble components in the surface of the antifouling are absorbed by seawater the roughness comes to a halt. Fuel consumption is not reduced as no further smoothing takes place. As more of the soluble components are released the remains create rough leached layers.
Unlike with hydrolysing products the antifouling effect here is not constant, it now begins to reduce in effectiveness. Frequently some underwater cleaning may be required if more than 24 to 36 months' truly efficient antifouling is to be achieved.
As hull roughness increases, fuel consumption rises and is further aggravated as fouling may manifest itself.
SeaQuantum hydrolysing selfsmoothing, selfpolishing type
Any surface peaks present after application of the antifouling polish away at a faster rate than the general paint film. The initial roughness is therefore reduced.
The biocide (copperomadine) in SeaQuantum dissolves in seawater from the surface of the antifouling preventing marine growth. Once the non-toxic silyl group in SeaQuantum is released, the polymer backbone, which is soluble in seawater, will then dissolve leaving the paint surface exposed and the process is repeated until the vessel re-enters drydock. The performance remains the same for the life of the paint.
Hull roughness, antifouling performance and, consequently, the reduction in fuel consumption remains constant until the total antifouling film has been polished away. As with tin-containing selfpolishing antifouling of this type, SeaQuantum TBT-free antifoulings provide 60 months truly efficient performance
