In November 1999 the 21st International Maritime Organization (IMO) Assembly agreed that 'the legally binding instrument to be developed by the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) should ensure a global prohibition of the application of organotin compounds which act as biocides in antifouling systems on ships by 1 January 2003 and a complete prohibition of the presence of organotin compounds which act as biocides in antifouling systems on ships by 1 January 2008'.

The ban of TBT antifoulings has resulted in an increasing number of "new" antifouling products designed to replace the performance of the previously successful TBT products. This has increased the complexity in the market and made the determination of "equivalent" products comparing the antifouling paint suppliers much more difficult for you as the customer. The lack of a dominating resin technology in the market has lead to an increase in antifouling prices offered making the decision/selection process even more important. The most advanced antifouling products on the market today, like our SeaQuantum range, does offer the same advantages/features as the previous TBT-products, but it comes at a higher initial cost.

As a result of the above it is crucial that the individual vessel need is evaluated before the selection of antifouling product and supplier is made. Such evaluations will in many cases show that a cost efficient antifouling solution can match the performance of a more expensive selection of products. Many vessels in their trade can not necessarily benefit from all features offered by the more expensive antifouling products.
