To protect the underwater hull of large vessels against fouling for long periods of time can be a challenging task both technically and financially

Technically one has to pay attention to the three separate areas of the underwater hull and their antifouling requirements.
Tanker and larger bulk carrier will have a boottop area (between deep load line, DLL and light load line, LLL) that is not exposed to water for up to 50% of the time. This results in reduced requirements with regards to dry film thickness but it also requires that the antifouling paint is "resistant" to UV radiation and the stress and strain of the wet-dry cycles.
The lower vertical sides (between the LLL and the turn of the bilge) of a vessel are generally the most critical area to ensure optimal protection. The area is constantly immersed and exposed to light and therefore a good basis for all kinds of marine fouling. Fouling in this area will have significant effects on speed and fuel consumption.
The huge area of the flat bottom generally requires less from an antifouling (biocide package/technology and dry film thickness) to maintain it fouling free. On a larger tanker this is due to the fact that the fouling is less extensive (dark conditions) and the combination with reduced paint consumption.
The combined system was designed to meet these demands and offer a cost reduced solution for the long dry-docking intervals (60 months), one option can be seen below:

SeaQuantum logo

(1) 1st coat SeaForce 90 or SeaForce 60
(2) 2nd coat SeaForce 90 or SeaForce 60
(3) 3rd coat SeaQuantum Classic (from turn of bilge to light load line)

The above combined system offers a cost efficient system whilst at the same time matching the basic needs of most larger tanker and bulk carriers. Probably the most attractive features of this system are the simplicity (both new buildings and dry-dockings), the antifouling performance and the fact that SeaQuantum Classic will offer unrivaled smoothing performance during the first 24-30 months of trading.
